A journey through art, collective memory, and architecture at the Monumental Cemetery of Reggio Emilia, founded in the 17th century and transformed in the 19th century based on a design by Domenico Marchelli. Walking among porticoes, sculptures, mosaics, frescoes and monumental tombs created by masters such as Prospero Sorgato and Anselmo Govi, we will discover how this neoclassical space tells the story of the city’s identity and past through artistic forms and the lives of notable characters.

Hidden memories and urban art in dialogue with Fotografia Europea. A special journey through the historic center and the northern district of the city, discovering sites of urban transformation. From Joan Fontcuberta’s collective artwork at the Chiostri di San Pietro to the Mirabello Stadium and the Ex Mangimificio Caffarri, we will walk between memory and the contemporary.

We’ll explore spaces that no longer exist in their original form and those we are witnessing slowly empty out and transform, making room for new stimuli and ideas. This itinerary is dedicated to urban art, industrial architecture, and our "everyday ghosts," all in dialogue with the 2026 Fotografia Europea Festival.

The theme of this edition is "Ghosts of the Moment": exhibitions, installations, conferences, meetings, workshops, showings and performances.

European Photography will celebrate its twenty-first edition with a long journey into the territories of the visible and the invisible.

They are the shadow of something that has lost its body, yet keep knocking at the night of the mind. They are a memory that refuses to become past, a fear dressed as mystery, a presence made of absence. They dwell in the corridors of silence, live in the cracks of memory, and feed on what was left unsaid. At times they make us tremble; at others they shield us into forgetting.

They have no face, only a thousand masks. You can drive them off with the light of an idea, or listen to them to learn what they hunger for. Yet ghosts are not only a menace, they are latent presences, suspended potentials, ideas that never quite departed.

Ghosts of the Moment is an invitation to seek out the unseen and the invisible, pay attention to the whispers of what has been and what could be, revealing the silent stories that inform and guide our present while simultaneously opening up new paths for the imagination.

This edition of European Photography also explores the quiet endurance of memory: how memories fade yet refuse to vanish entirely. Each photograph holds its own echo, a spectral reminder that even as time slips away, it keeps its essence suspended. Here the past is not gone, it breathes softly within the now.

The smallest museum in the world is located in Albinea's main square, opposite the Town Hall, and is managed by Pro Loco Albinea and Anpi Albinea. It houses artefacts dating back to the unification of Italy.
On one side wall of the building is a plaque commemorating the arrival of the partisans and the Allies, including the Brazilian contingent, in Piazza Cavicchioni in Albinea on 24 April.

2) ‘Floor Vector of Memory’ by Liberation Route Europe
Piazza Cavicchioni

On a side wall of the “Museum” of Stories that weigh heavily is the Floor Vector, a steel disc that is part of a European memorial sign, designed by architect Daniel Libeskind for the Liberation Route Europe Foundation to mark places linked to the Gothic Line and the progressive advance of the Allies.

3) Villa Rossi and the plaque in memory of the British paratroopers and Villa Calvi
Via Chiesa, Botteghe

These are the sites of the most important events in Albinea during the Second World War: the killing of five rebellious German soldiers in August 1944 and the assault by the British SAS and partisans on the command of the 51st German Alpine Corps.

4) Partisan trail of Operation Tombola
Vendina-Botteghe route.

A walk retracing the paths that, on the night between 26 and 27 March 1945, led 110 men to attack the German command posts at Villa Rossi and Villa Calvi.
'Operation Tombola' was the name of the operation that destroyed the German command centre in Botteghe, cutting off contact between Berlin and the Gothic Line.

5) Tulip Trail and Memorial to Richard Cooley
Via Poiano

A cycle and footpath that winds along Via Poiano.
An American aircraft crashed nearby during the Second World War: a P-38 on 12 May 1944.
The 24-year-old American pilot Richard Arthur Cooley lost his life in the crash.
After the war, Richard's mother visited the place where her son had crashed and, so as not to forget him, planted tulips in the area of the crash.
This gesture of pity and emotion, based on an idea by Reggio Emilia researcher and journalist Matteo Incerti, who tragically passed away before he could see his project come to fruition, led to the creation of the “Cammino dei tulipani” (Tulip Trail) on 30 November 2022, which was dedicated to his memory.

6) Berlin Wall
Via Caduti per la Libertà (opposite Renzo Pezzani Primary School)

Since 1999, a section of the Berlin Wall has stood in front of Albinea Primary School. It was donated to the Albinea local council by the twin municipality of Treptow-Köpenick in Berlin as a sign of friendship and as a warning against war and in favour of peace between peoples.

7) Memorial stone in memory of Mario Simonazzi “Azor”
Via Caduti per la Libertà (in front of the Renzo Pezzani primary school)

The monument, dedicated to the memory of the partisan Mario Simonazzi, whose nom de guerre was “Azor” and who was deputy commander of the 76th SAP Brigade from February 1945, was previously located in Montericco, near the primary school.
It was later moved to Fola, opposite the Renzo Pezzani school.
It is a small column in chalky stone with a relief inscription and a photo-ceramic image of the fallen soldier.

8) “Mai più” (Never Again) monument
Piazza Caduti Alleati, Botteghe

This is a stone work by Adriano Corradini.
It commemorates the five German soldiers Hans Schmidt, Erwin Bucher, Erwin Schlunder, Karl Heinz Schreyer and Martin Koch, who were shot by their fellow soldiers on the night of 26 August 1944 at Villa Rossi e Calvi for deciding to rebel against Nazi-Fascism.
An oval bronze bas-relief depicting the head of a German soldier, the gate of Villa Rossi and an armed partisan was later added to the monument.

9) Monument to the Fallen of All Wars
Piazza Cavicchioni

Made of concrete and hexagonal in shape, the monument has a grey marble plaque with an inscription in relief on the central side, while on the sides, which are plastered and orange in colour, there are four bronze bas-reliefs depicting allegorical figures of women, children and animals, together with other symbols referring to brotherhood and peace among peoples.

10) Base of the First World War Memorial
Parco dei Frassini 'M. Hack'

This is a granite base engraved with the words “Albinea ai suoi caduti 1915-1918” (Albinea to its fallen 1915-1918), on top of which stood a fine bronze statue depicting an infantryman (unknown soldier) by the sculptor E.
In Parco dei Frassini there is a monument dedicated to the Italian Constitution, created by sculptors Bertani and Romani based on a design by Jehona Vatovci (2009) and drawings by pupils at Albinea middle school.
It consists of a central part in Corten steel, two marble parts embedded in the ground and a lectern with a marble top on which are carved the words “founded on work...” from Article 1 and “...repudiates war” from Article 11 of our Constitution.
The two metal plates leave a central space in which the cogwheel is depicted, also present in the emblem of the Italian Republic.
This figure symbolises work, the foundation of our Republic, as indicated in the first article of the Constitution.
It therefore represents work and progress.

This is a series of three white marble plaques engraved with the names of the people of Albinea who died during the Great War as a result of wounds sustained in service and illness.
There is also a fourth memorial stone in memory of the Albinea partisans who fell in the fight against Nazi-Fascism. They are located in the atrium of the Albinea Town Hall.

Here lies the tomb of Isaia Cassinadri, a young man from Albinea who was killed by the Germans during the Second World War.
On the morning of 27 March 1945, the day after the partisan and Allied assault known as “Operation Tombola”, Isaia was killed by German rifle fire as they combed the Vendina area in search of the attackers of Villa Rossi and Villa Calvi.

The park, inaugurated in March 2017 in the presence of a delegation from the Berlin district of Treptow-Köpenick (twinned with the Municipality of Albinea), commemorates the 110 men who took part in Operation Tombola on the night between 26 and 27 March 1945 and the five German soldiers who were executed by their commander between 26 and 27 August 1944 after being discovered passing information to the partisans.

The Garibaldi Fountain was once a public fountain but is now located on private land.
A plaque on the fountain reads: “To the general of the people, Giuseppe Garibaldi, source of freedom and emancipation. Albinea, May 1862”.
The lack of a date indicates that the plaque was prepared by a committee of admirers awaiting the official inauguration in the presence of Garibaldi (according to tradition), which never took place.
It is the first inscription dedicated to the hero in the province and the only one made while the general was still alive.

Reggio Emilia - Town centre

Historical notes

A treasure trove of history and architecture in the heart of Reggio Emilia, Palazzo da Mosto is one of the city's most fascinating 15th-century residences.
Its history began in 1472, when Francesco da Mosto, a high-ranking ducal official, transformed a simple domus into a veritable palatium, creating an elegant residence inspired by Ferrara's architectural culture, attributed to Biagio Rossetti.

Over the centuries, the palace changed hands several times until 1857, when Pietro Manodori, then mayor of Reggio, bought it from the Greppi counts of Milan for a visionary project: to open a free nursery school accessible to all.
Throughout the 20th century, this institution became a laboratory of pedagogical innovation, capable of adapting to social changes and educating generations of children.
The nursery remained active until 1991.

Today, thanks to the recent restoration by the Manodori Foundation, Palazzo da Mosto has been restored to its former glory and now hosts cultural activities, exhibitions and initiatives open to the community.

Walking through its rooms, you can admire precious details:
• the cornice decorated with terracotta medallions featuring male heads;
• the spectacular 18th-century staircase, which leads from the courtyard to the arched loggia on the main floor, once adorned with two canine statues now preserved in the Palazzo dei Musei;
• the ancient painted wooden chests and the delicate traces of original frescoes;
• in the basement, the fascinating medieval floors that reveal the different living levels of the past.

Nowadays, Palazzo da Mosto is a rediscovered place, open to the cultural and social life of the city, where history and modernity dialogue in harmony.

Permanent artistic intervention at the former Mangimificio Caffarri in Reggio Emilia.

Address

Via Flavio Gioia, 4, 42124, Reggio Emilia

Opening hours

Always visible

Description

David Tremlett worked on the thirteen large silos and the adjacent façade of the former Caffarri building - a structure located in the northern area of the city and previously involved in recovery projects - to transform them into the distinctive landmark of a space dedicated to education and community life. The area is home to the Reggio Children Foundation, the Remida Creative Recycling Centre, The Lego Foundation, the MaMiMò Theatre Centre and a boxing gym.

The Organ Pipes represents one of the most imposing permanent works created by Tremlett: the silos of the former feed factory cover a total area of 750 m² over 75 metres in length; each cylinder features 100 m² of façade and reaches a height of 11.30 metres.

The cultural project aims to give new value to a significant portion of the city, relevant for its economic and social history and now subject to urban regeneration processes, establishing an ideal connection with the San Pietro Cloisters, which are destined to become an international centre dedicated to contemporary art.

The artist also created a refined permanent intervention, titled Interno (Interior), within the San Pietro monumental complex. It is a small wall drawing executed with hand-blended pastels, placed in a niche of the Sala delle Colonne (Hall of Columns). The traced lines follow and enhance the rhythm of the wall, while the chromatic gradation - from shades of grey to sage and forest green - creates the illusion of a perspective opening that ideally expands the space. "Interno," says Marina Dacci, "is a kind of meditative passage, a glimpse that leads towards an elsewhere."

The artist
David Tremlett (St. Austell, Cornwall, 1945), a prominent figure in the international art scene with sixty years of research behind him, was invited to Reggio Emilia by Marina Dacci to view the former Caffarri up close. This visit led to the decision to intervene on the thirteen silos and the building's façade, making them a visible, identifying element of a space focused on growth and social interaction, particularly for young people.

For over twenty years, the city of Reggio Emilia has invested in contemporary art as a tool for the regeneration of complex or transforming areas, with the aim of promoting social and educational development. Between 2003 and 2006, the public art project "Invito a..." (Invitation to...), conceived by the artist Claudio Parmiggiani, was developed. It involved four major international figures - Luciano Fabro, Eliseo Mattiacci, Robert Morris and Sol LeWitt - in the conception and realization of permanent works in several urban spaces. Curiosa Meravigliosa, a participatory work by Joan Fontcuberta, was added to this project in 2022.
