European Photography

The theme of this edition is "Ghosts of the Moment": exhibitions, installations, conferences, meetings, workshops, showings and performances.

European Photography will celebrate its twenty-first edition with a long journey into the territories of the visible and the invisible.

They are the shadow of something that has lost its body, yet keep knocking at the night of the mind. They are a memory that refuses to become past, a fear dressed as mystery, a presence made of absence. They dwell in the corridors of silence, live in the cracks of memory, and feed on what was left unsaid. At times they make us tremble; at others they shield us into forgetting.

They have no face, only a thousand masks. You can drive them off with the light of an idea, or listen to them to learn what they hunger for. Yet ghosts are not only a menace, they are latent presences, suspended potentials, ideas that never quite departed.

Ghosts of the Moment is an invitation to seek out the unseen and the invisible, pay attention to the whispers of what has been and what could be, revealing the silent stories that inform and guide our present while simultaneously opening up new paths for the imagination.

This edition of European Photography also explores the quiet endurance of memory: how memories fade yet refuse to vanish entirely. Each photograph holds its own echo, a spectral reminder that even as time slips away, it keeps its essence suspended. Here the past is not gone, it breathes softly within the now.

History

The Permanent Display for Agricultural Civilization was born in the first half of the seventies of the XX century within the local Middle School. In the context of a research by the students on the work of their grandparents, many objects and tools used in the countryside were collected, being the grandparents for the most part farmers. Taking into account that this material was only a small part of what was still kept, but no longer used, there was the proposal to make an organic collection, that saw the children busy - with the assistance of teachers, janitors and parents - wandering around the country houses, always meeting the generous availability of the families they visited.

The relaunch of the activity of the Display is proposed within the same logic: favouring the privileged relationship with schools and young people, enhancing voluntary work and local products.

This new life of the exhibition is actually made possible thanks to the commitment, which lasted for 8 years, of many volunteers and thanks to the sensitivity of hundreds of citizens who have enriched the exhibition path with thousands of donations. The Permanent Display is the result of the commitment of an entire community which thus intended to preserve the material documentation of its roots in order to propose them to new generations and new citizens.

There is a close relationship between the local food and wine products (Lambrusco, Parmigiano Reggiano, cured meats, watermelons, honey, etc.) and ancient and widespread knowledge, skills and sensitivity that the exhibition intends to enhance.

The Display is located in the suggestive environment of the XV-century cellar of the Gonzaga Fortress, a few steps from the Gonzaga Museum, the Tagliavini Theatre and the Municipal Vinegar cellar. This inclusion contributes, already now and even more in the future, to making the Fortress a museum and cultural container of absolute importance.

The XVIII-century Palazzo Sartoretti, with its scenographic bulk, is located on the southern side of Piazza Martiri.

Originally from the XVI century, it was modified in 1765 by the rich family of the same name who lived there and which was the contractor of the duties of the Dukes of Guastalla for decades.

In 1979 it was bequeathed to the Municipality, following a testamentary bequest by the last descendant of the Sartoretti family, Donna Amelia. The building, now largely renovated, has returned to its original splendour.

The façade includes the central body and two lower wings articulated on three levels. The window openings follow one another in an orderly and symmetrical way: very simple those on the ground floor, intended for services; larger and more important those on the noble floor, simple again on the third level, intended for the servants' apartments.

Inside, an XVIII-century staircase with balustrade leads to the rooms on the main floor, characterized by pictorial interventions carried out between the late XVIII century and the early XIX century, that give it a marked neoclassical connotation, with references to interiors and Pompeian-style decorations. Noteworthy is the magnificent party room (with original flooring) now called the Salone dei Miti, in which the trompe-l'oeil decorations create surprising three-dimensional effects to the eye of the visitor. The recurring decoration with turrets and bulls, referring to the name of the Sartoretti family, is also noteworthy as a curiosity. Maintaining the original layout allows you to appreciate the structure of a former noble house.

The building opens onto a large inner garden used as a public park, open every day and equipped with rest-and-play areas.

After the restoration following the damage suffered in the 2012 earthquake, it was transformed into the Town Hall, and other inside spaces house the Municipal Library and the Civic Art Gallery.

The altarpiece, within a wonderful wooden frame, depicts the Virgin Mary seated on a throne with the Child, flanked by Saints Stefano and Eleucadio. In 2010 the restoration work that brought the parish church back to its former glory was completed.

The Clock Tower was erected in the Middle Ages to watch over the passage of men and goods in the Secchia bed, which then lapped the Castellarano Fortress.

At the foot of the tower passed the pilgrims on their way to Rome, on a journey of a thousand unknowns but with strong existential connotations, and the merchants coming from Tuscany and usually headed to Ferrara.

It was also possible to control an activity that seems strange to us: navigation. In fact the Secchia river was often navigable by boats, similar to barges, which were exploited for the transport of goods, so much so that at the beginning of the XIV century the Municipality of Modena decided that the timber, sent to the town from the mountain, was transported on boat from Sassuolo downstream, to safeguard the bridges, put at risk by the transit of heavy goods. There was also a system of ferries connecting Castellarano to San Michele, which then belonged to the jurisdiction of Castellarano.

This activity was supposed to be very important as there is via Barcaroli in the town centre, probably the seat of families dedicated to this activity.

In the late XVII century the Tower hosted the prisons and a room for the caretaker on the ground floor. The element that characterizes the tower is the clock with single-hand dials placed on four sides and corresponding to the four cardinal points. The clock mechanism is regulated by a weight system that is still now perfectly functional, even if it dates back to the early XVII century.

Villa Levi is one of the most typical villas of the Reggio Emilia countryside, surrounded by an Italian-style garden and a wide park.

Address

Via Fratelli Rosselli, 107 - 42123 Reggio nell'Emilia

Opening times

It is possible to visit it only during events. The University of Bologna is the owner of the villa.

Historical notes

Villa Levi is one of the most typical villas of the Reggio Emilia countryside, characterized by the presence of the imposing metal dome and the giant colonnade on the south side. Surrounded by the eclectic-style park where are also monumental trees, it is fronted to the north by a long perspective avenue (about 680 meters) which gives the building a key role in the landscape. It is a distinctively neoclassical-style building, designed as a summer residence probably in the first half of the XVII century, but significantly remodeled between 1790 and 1810 by order of the Besenzi family, the first owners. The renovation project is by architect Domenico Marchelli and involved the introduction of the tympanum that slightly surpasses the building. Architect Marchelli also arranged of the wide "Italian-style" garden and bulit the two service buildings, which served as the caretaker's house and stable.

In the thirties of the XIX century, a second significant renovation was carried out by the Modena-born engineer and architect Luigi Poletti; he introduced the dome supported by a giant circular colonnade and the "new" south elevation, with the creation of a colonnaded pronaos and a monumental staircase that connects the ground level to the main floor. The villa thus acquires an influence that refers to Palladian influences.

The circular arcade was probably used for outdoor parties and small performances. Below the dome is a large circular hall that projects towards the park through the large windows. The villa passed to the Levi family in 1874; the interior decorations in Art Nouveau style may be traced back to the early XX century. It was then acquired by the Pelosi family in 1956 and by the University of Bologna in 1971, which made it the seat of the Animal Production Sciences course.

The interiors

Villa Levi Auditorium

The central hall, the former University Auditorium, is the largest and most majestic room in the entire Villa. It is here that, in the XIX century, gorgeous dances, parties and ceremonies took place with the most important aristocratic families of the town as protagonists. It is a hemispherical room characterized by a giant circular colonnade composed of 12 free columns in faux marble ending with a finely worked Corinthian capital. The interior of the double-cap dome is painted in a light blue colour, a choice that is anything but casual wanted by the Levi family. Very rich family of the Jewish community of Reggio Emilia, the Levi belonged to the Freemasonry. Masonic tradition has it that meetings ideally take place under the celestial vault, so as to be directly in contact with the spirituality of the universe. Indoors, however, in his ideal ascent towards infinity, the Freemason could find in the vault of the Temple a limit to his visual horizon: to avoid this, domes and vaults were painted blue or, in the most opulent cases, with the starry sky, so as to allow a symbolic opening towards infinity.

The dome

The dome of Villa Levi is the most characteristic architectural elements of the Villa, also because it is one of a kind. At Villa Levi are actually two domes: the first one, made in brickwork, is inside the building and serves as the ceiling of the Auditorium; the other one, the most famous, is the one seen from the outside. The latter, real masterpiece of architecture and engineering, unlike what you might think, is not made in brickwork, but entirely made up of a delicate intertwining of wooden planks covered externally with a thin layer of copper. Below the dome is a very suggestive hall, also known as "the two-dome hall", whose floor is made up of the dome which serves as ceiling of the Auditorium below and whose ceiling is made up of the outside dome. On the top of the dome is a balcony, reachable through a small wooden spiral staircase, which was used by the Levi family as a privileged astronomical observatory for stargazing. Inside the room, on the walls and the wooden beams, are several inscriptions, some of them very old, testifying to the execution of the restoration works.
The two domes and the underlying giant circular colonnade are additions to the original layout of the Villa and date back to the thirties of the XIX century; they were made by the famous Modena-born architect and engineer Luigi Poletti.

The Park

Immersed in the agricultural landscape of the Reggio Emilia plain, the 4-hectare park extends between via Fratelli Rosselli to the south and the Modolena stream to the west. The area is divided into two zones with rather different characteristics: to the east, on the front of the neoclassical Villa Levi, is a large and well-kept lawn, elliptical in shape, bordered by dense tree-lined wings, while to the west are open spaces with a more natural aspect, rustic lawns and a long mixed hedge running along the bank of the stream. The arboreal heritage is remarkable with a high diversity of species and specimens of really considerable sizes: cedars, ash trees, plane trees, lime trees and various English oaks.

From 1888 the villa hosted Margherita Levi and, for several years, her first husband, baron Alberto Franchetti (1860-1942), from the noble Jewish Sephardic family (his mother's name was Rothschild) and famous composer of operas belonging to the realist school. Raimondo Franchetti (1889-1935), son of Margherita and Alberto, was the last Italian explorer of Africa and died from the explosion of his plane in the skies over Cairo (his hunting trophies and the finds from his journeys, especially in Dancalia, are kept in the Reggio Emilia-based Natural History Museum). Some testimonies tell that the park previously had relatively modest dimensions and was limited to the part in front of the villa, while in the western area was a small lake. The greenery seen today may be thus largely traced back to the early decades of the last century and to the work of Margherita Levi.

Curiosities

The recently discovered tunnel is located in the middle of the long dirt road that connects Villa Levi to Coviolo. In the dark years of the Second World War, the tunnel served as an anti-aircraft shelter: a place to escape to safety and to escape bombing. Villa Levi played a central role in those years: it was occupied by the Germans, used as a barracks and served as a hiding place for the curtain of Alfonso Chierici, who was about to be stolen in Germany. It was the partisan "Gigi" (Pierino Beggi) who in 1944, with a blitz, hid him near his home, in order to keep him under control.

DESCRIZIONE DELL'OPERA

Historical data about the artist

Mario Pavesi was born in Guastalla (Reggio Emilia) August 5, 1945. After high school he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna and followed the Umberto Mastroianni Sculpture Course. There he met sculptor Dante Carpigiani who, together with the Novellara-born painter Vivaldo Poli, will become reference points for his human and artistic training. In forty years of activity, he has experimented with several painting and sculpture trends, always and in any case free from the logic of the market and the fashions of the time, but always linked to the sphere of emotions and the constant search for a suffered self-exploration. Currently, in addition to artistic production, he dedicates himself to an intense educational activity by holding training courses at various levels. He lives and works in Novellara, in the province of Reggio Emilia.

Giannetto Cimurri (1905-2002) was a myth of cycling, real ambassador of the local sport when globalization did not exist.

Giannetto Cimurri lived the entire century leaving a permanent mark on this sport: masseur of the National team for 34 years, he participated in 8 Olympics, 74 World Road Championships, track and cyclocross, 11 Tours de France, 10 Tours of Romandie, 6 Tours of Switzerland, 40 Tours of Italy completed and another 6 not completed, as well as many other national and international races. An unparalleled curriculum to which must be added the activity in football (masseur for years for Reggiana) and in boxing (for the European Champion Gino Bondavalli).

His friendship with Fausto Coppi, with whom he had established a very close relationship, was unforgettable, so as to become a close friend and confidant of him. In 1930 he founded the Velo Club Reggio, while in 1933 he opened a sporting goods shop run by the family. In 1951 he created the “Discipline Award”, awarded every year to a young local cyclist. In the 1980s, he was the organizer of the Asso World Championship, that brought together the world champions living in Italy for several years in Reggio Emilia.

Knight of the Republic for sporting merits since 1965, Cross of the Hospital Order of Malta since 1949, Giannetto was awarded numerous prizes, including the Golden Star for sports merits in 1988. May 27, 2001, one year before his death and on the same day when the Tour of Italy stopped in Reggio Emilia, a Cycling Start-up Track dedicated him was inaugurated in Reggio Emilia in the Campovolo area, one of the first in Italy to welcome champions of cycling for safe trainings.

May 21, 2007, on the occasion of the stage of the Giro d'Italia "Reggio Emilia-Lido di Camaiore", a flying finish line was assigned in his memory in Castelnovo né Monti (RE).

Perhaps few people know that Giannetto also tried the experience with practiced cycling. During his first race, in San Maurizio, a district of Reggio Emilia, he fell disastrously: "I broke my knee and feared an amputation of my right leg, Giannetto remembered, I had to abandon the practiced sport and, from then on, I have dedicated myself to others".

That is the reason why he became a masseur and talent scout.

The Bicycles

With these words Giannetto Cimurri explains the reason for this collection of over 130 bicycles, which began in 1953 when Fausto Coppi gave him one of his four legendary Bianchi, prepared for the world road championship.

This collection is not a simple collection of memorabilia of the greatest champions, such as Fausto Coppi, Gino Bartali, Antonio Maspes, Eddy Merckx, Felice Gimondi, Francesco Moser, Marco Pantani, but it is the true story of two centuries told by pedal strokes, where the bicycle is the real protagonist.

"Giannetto Cimurri. The Masseur and the bikes of his champions" was hosted in the rooms that house the Credem headquarters in via Emilia San Pietro, an exhibition of 36 bicycles selected from over 130 from the Giannetto Cimurri Collection, pink and yellow jerseys, unpublished photos of work, friendship and sport, posters of the most important world cycling races from the 40s to the 50s.

Due to the Coronavirus, the exhibition is temporarily suspended.

Thanks to Spazio Credem and this magnificent video, you can rediscover its history and virtually visit the dedicated exhibition. Good vision!
