Reggiolo was mentioned for the first time in 1044 in a document of the Canossa family and was the site of an important river port.
It then passed to the Bonaccolsi family and the Gonzaga family, to the Duchy of which it was annexed until 1631, and then passed to Guastalla.
In 1748, after the Aquisgrana peace treaty, the former Duchy of Guastalla was assigned to the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza, ruled by the Borboni.
From 1847 to 1869 Reggiolo was annexed to the Duchy of Parma and Modena and become part of the Italian State.

Matilde di Canossa, one of the most powerful and influential women of the Middle Ages, died on the night between July 24 and 25, 1115 at Bondanazzo, formerly Bondeno di Roncore, in the Municipality of Reggiolo.

Now the town is mainly dedicated to craft and industrial activities, particularly focused on the construction, clothing, engineering and chemical industries.

It has a square plan structure, with four corner towers open towards the inside and two protruding southern towers.
The big central tower, used as a fortified tower, to the restoration of which the Florentine architect Luca Fancelli gave an important contribution in 1470, maintains a stairway of 1405 used as artillery depot.

Historical Notes

This Corinthian-style church, with one nave and two aisles, contains a mixture of elements typical of the work of the architect Cesare Costa, in a compromise between a Greek and a Latin cross layout.
The result is an imposing and harmonious interior, with a large central dome and two spacious side chapels. The 18th-century side chapel on the left is the only remaining part of the previous building, originally from the early 17th century, which was demolished before the present one was built.
In the presbytery there is a magnificent18th-century altar in inlaid marble that came from another church demolished in Guastalla.
The side chapel on the left, dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, also has a splendid marble altar that had been in the original church. On the side walls of the chapel are two old marble portals. The side chapel on the right is dedicated to the Holy Crucifix and contains an altar and ancon in scagliola which was also in the original church.
The façade has a liturgical orientation and is bipartite with a raised central section culminating in a triangular pediment.
The side wings are joined to the main façade by a high moulded cornice, while the lower part of the façade is intersected by pilaster strips.
There are three entrances to the church. The main entrance is under a lunette and the side entrances under triangular tympanums.
The church has a fine external Baroque bell tower for which construction works started in 1700 and were completed eighty years later.
The church suffered serious damage as a result of the 1996 and 2012 earthquake and was closed from May 2012 to October 2020.

The XVIII-century Palazzo Sartoretti, with its scenographic bulk, is located on the southern side of Piazza Martiri.

Originally from the XVI century, it was modified in 1765 by the rich family of the same name who lived there and which was the contractor of the duties of the Dukes of Guastalla for decades.

In 1979 it was bequeathed to the Municipality, following a testamentary bequest by the last descendant of the Sartoretti family, Donna Amelia. The building, now largely renovated, has returned to its original splendour.

The façade includes the central body and two lower wings articulated on three levels. The window openings follow one another in an orderly and symmetrical way: very simple those on the ground floor, intended for services; larger and more important those on the noble floor, simple again on the third level, intended for the servants' apartments.

Inside, an XVIII-century staircase with balustrade leads to the rooms on the main floor, characterized by pictorial interventions carried out between the late XVIII century and the early XIX century, that give it a marked neoclassical connotation, with references to interiors and Pompeian-style decorations. Noteworthy is the magnificent party room (with original flooring) now called the Salone dei Miti, in which the trompe-l'oeil decorations create surprising three-dimensional effects to the eye of the visitor. The recurring decoration with turrets and bulls, referring to the name of the Sartoretti family, is also noteworthy as a curiosity. Maintaining the original layout allows you to appreciate the structure of a former noble house.

The building opens onto a large inner garden used as a public park, open every day and equipped with rest-and-play areas.

After the restoration following the damage suffered in the 2012 earthquake, it was transformed into the Town Hall, and other inside spaces house the Municipal Library and the Civic Art Gallery.

route analysis

Mixed grounds route, with paved roads, gravel, dirt tracks and cobblestone roads, with low difficulty for all people.
Route length: 46,6 km
Difficulty level: low. The route crosses country roads and streets with low or no traffic.

route description

We start this route from Reggiolo and its Rocca (castle). This fortress was built around the main tower, in order to defend Reggio Emilia settlements against Mantua raids. Continuing along Via Matteotti, we can notice on our right side Palazzo Sartoretti, recently restored and re-opened after the 2012 earthquake, that hit critically the historical buildings of Reggiolo with major damages. This palace, once official residence of the homonymous family, hosts the communal offices, the library, and an eleven-thousand square meters public park with playgrounds, farm animals and educational activities for kids.

Following the track lead, we pass across the Reggiolo part of Novellara Valleys, European Union Environmental site for Ecological and Biodiversity Restoration.
We cross then SP5 road, paying particular attention to the safety, and we take Via Bonifica, entering Fabbrico territory. Continuing along the gravel road, we can notice on our right the Heron's Hill (Collina degli Aironi), natural uplifted area where we can take amazing shots of the plain, while on clear sunny days we can eye-reach the Apennines Peaks.

We then arrive in Fabbrico, home of the historical tractor brand Landini. In the town, reserving with anticipation, we can visit some late-medieval rooms inside Guidotti Castle. These rooms were restored in order to host meetings and weddings, while the other parts of the structure are private. This neoclassical building was designed by Cesare Costa, the architect that designed also Valli Theatre in Reggio Emilia. This castle is still inhabited by the Guidotti family, historical family of the ancient Dukedom of Correggio who traded precious fabrics and silks for the Estense States. The big surrounding garden can stun some century-old trees and exotic plants.

With a little detour in Campagnola Emilia, we can visit Bird Oasis Celestina by the Italian League for Bird Protection (LIPU), restored in 2001 in a biodiversity oasis, thanks also to local organisation. Officially opened in 2005, it has a observation tower for birdwatching. The oasis, in a continuous development, hosts an impressive bird population, among these, there are: black-winged stilts, shrikes, terns, mallards, moorhens, and of course meny birds of prey and migrating birds that here stops in their trip from Northern Europe to Africa. Inside the territory, another landmark is San Bernardino Court, where in 1423 San Bernardino da Siena found refuge here. Please note that you have to contact the Municipality beforehand to have a visit, as this place is not open during fall and winter. Campagnola Emilia Municipality: (+39) 0522-753358.

We then arrive in Novellara, where we are welcomed by the Gonzaga Fortress, official residence of Gonzaga-Novellara family. The symbol of the town, with its mighty presence, is the "campanone" (the bell tower), overlooking everything below it. The Campanone gives also its name to a famous type of Lambrusco wine, produced within walking distance in a local winemaker establishment. This town is also the birthplace of one of the most famous alternative rock band in Italy: I Nomadi. Here, we can visit also a permanent exhibition of paintings made by the late frontman and founder of this band: Augusto Daolio. The Gonzaga Museum, at the upper floors of the Rocca, occupies several rooms, where we can discover more about the noble life of the Gonzaga family.

Continuing our route, we flank the Reggio-Guastalla railroad and we cross inside the Fossa towns (Fossa is a local canal that gives the name to the surrounding towns).
We then arrive in Bagnolo in Piano, where our route is overlapped to the trekking trail of Via Matildica del Volto Santo, a long-distance trail from Mantua to Lucca, passing through the entire Reggio Emilia province from north to south, from Guastalla until the border with Tuscany.

Entering the Reggio Emilia urban territory, we cross Rodano Park, 400 hectars of urban park, European Union Site of Interest and Ecological Restoration Area. Here we can find also the Mauriziano, residence of the famous Italian writer Ludovico Ariosto, and one of the most distinguished places of historical identity of Reggio Emilia.

Crossing the bridge on the Rodano stream, we arrive near the Reggio Emilia AV Mediopadana High Speed Train Station, unmistakable symbol of the progress developing in the city and major hub for travellers of all of Italy. We follow the road under the A1 motorway and we flank the Mapei Stadium - Città del Tricolore, home of the local football teams AC Reggiana 1919 and US Sassuolo. Following the CAI signals of Via Matildica, we cross the urban area of Reggio Emilia, finding ourselves near the Parco del Popolo and Valli Theatre. Only a couple hundred meters separate us from the arrival of this route, located in Piazza Prampolini, center of the ancient city.
