Historical notes

Area of ancient human settlement, it was first inhabited by the Cisalpine Gauls and then by the Romans who founded Tannetum, a thriving town, especially in the Augustan age.
In the high Middle Ages reclamation work was carried out on the land, for which prisoners (captati) were often used, giving rise to the name Gattatico.
After being under, alternately, Farnese, Sforza, Papal, French and Austrian domination, the town was elevated to a Municipality in 1805 and in 1853 passed officially to the Diocese of Reggio Emilia.
The area is rich in villas and manor courts, including the two estates of Pantaro di Sotto and Pantaro di Sopra. The interesting San Matteo Church is situated in Praticello.

There is also a collection of farm tools relating to the work and life of a farming family in the first half of the last century.
The museum promotes a rich calendar of conferences, exhibitions and cultural events (the most important being is the Theatre Resistance Festival), and hosts a library of agricultural history.

Historical notes

The museum was built in 1960, but the collection of objects of rural culture dates back to 1970. It finds place in the rural house where the seven Cervi brothers lived; these were arrested by the Nazi-Fascists November 25, 1943, (then shot December 28, 1943) because they began the Resistance movement in the Reggio Emilia area.
In the museum there are documents and photos tied to the historical episodes of the Cervi brothers, the Resistance movement and rural culture. There are also working tools belonging to a rural family of the first half of this century. Moreover, the museum promotes various meetings, exhibitions and cultural activities, hosts an Agriculture History Library and a Naive Art picture collection.
In the farm surrounding the house was recently realized an agro-environmental park with a guided route in the history of the territory and the relations among man and environment, agriculture and landscape.

In 1230, the chapel of Gattatico was placed under the St. Eulalia Parish of Sant’Ilario d'Enza.
In 1628, it was transferred to the Vicariate of Castelnovo Sotto and in 1691 to the Vicariate of Sant’Ilario.
In 1841, the church was subject to the Parish of Sorbolo and then, in 1852, it was brought into the Diocese of Reggio Emilia.
The parish church, named after St. Thomas of Canterbury, has Romanesque origins but has undergone numerous transformations over centuries.
Its original entrance was on the eastern side, where the chancel and presbytery are now located.
The building conserves the relief image of an angel on a brick dating to the 11th-12th century.
The façade, with east-west orientation, has 15th-century characteristics with a double series of blind arches in the eaves moulding.
The archivaulted portal is surmounted by a large vaulted niche on demi-columns.
The construction of the bell tower, surmounted by a chamber with single-light windows with pointed arches and a spired roof, dates to 1882.

In Praticello is the Church of San Matteo, built between 1690 and 1703. The church’s façade was built in 1871. The embanked bell tower on oak piles leans approximately 30 centimetres.
The Church of San Vitale, situated on an artificial rise in Olmo, was consecrated in 1891. The church conserves an ancient wooden Madonna and a modern wooden Via Crucis from the Val Gardena.
The Church of San Francesco, in Taneto, conserves a gold chalice from 1605 and a silver monstrance from 1776.
There are also four courts in the area that are worthy of attention:
- Rainuzzi, northwest of Taneto,
- Ferri-Bigliardi in Nocetolo,
- Giordani, a courtyard with ancient frescoes located in Taneto,
- and Carmi, located in Fiesso.

Worthy of note as well are the various water mills in the area round Gattatico, and in particular the mill in Olmo on the Spelta canal and the mill in Fiesso, on the canal of the same name.

Cervi were a numerous family of tenant farmers, who lived in Praticello di Gattatico, composed of father Alcide, mother Genoveffa Cocconi, seven male sons (Gelindo, Antenore, Aldo, Agostino, Ferdinando, Ovidio, Ettore) and two female daughters (Diomira and Caterina). The seven male sons, fervently antifascist, were shot to death by the fascists in Reggio Emilia December 28, 1943, after their house was destroyed and they were arrested one month earlier.
