Location

The territories north of Reggio Emilia, situated between the Crostolo stream, the Enza river and the via Emilia road have been subject to extensive reclamation over the centuries, carried out by the Benedictine monks and by the Este family, permitting the growth of important human settlements. Cadelbosco Sopra is one of these.
The small town is situated 10 km from Reggio Emilia, and has historically always followed its fate. It is an agricultural town whose numerous cooperative dairies and farms produce significant amounts of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese.

Historical notes

This town can trace its origins back to around the 10th century when it was a village called Vico Zoario (from the Latin Zea, a graminaceous plant then very common in the area).
There is then a further reference in an ancient document where mention is made of the same village, referring to the foundation of the “Vico Zoario” castle.
In 1215 records show that the owner of the castle and the surrounding woods was a certain Gherardo del Bosco - from whom the present-day town presumably takes its name.
The next owners of the land were the Benedictines of San Giovanni of Parma who began the important work of land reclamation.
Further hydraulic works were undertaken in 1570 under the Bentivoglio family to ensure that none of the precious waters flowing down from the Apennines were wasted.

Not to be missed

From an artistic point of view, the XVII-century church dedicated to San Celestino, and Santissima Annunziata Church, with an elegant façade and a classic-style bell tower and inside an impressive organ by Triari, is worth a visit.
In Piazza della Libertà is the "Monument to the Resistance" by Marino Mazzacurati.
The town is also the birthplace of the artist Nani Tedeschi.
L'Altro Teatro offers performances with productions linked to contemporary art, young people and the territory.

In the vicinity

At a distance of 5 km is Cadelbosco di Sotto, of which it is worth mentioning the church of SS. Annunziata (1513) and, at the Crostolo Stream, the Botte Bentivoglio (1566), a masterpiece of hydraulic engineering.
It is a 77 m-long duct that allows the water of the reclamation canal to pass under the stream bed.

Historical notes

In 1103 a husband and wife, Guglielmo and Maria, donated a number of goods and properties to the monastery along with the part of the Chapel of San Celestino that was their property.
The Church of San Celestino is extensively mentioned in the charter of the Emperor Lothario in 1137, in that of Pope Celestine III in 1194 “In castro Vicoiovarii cum Capella San Celsi,” and in that of Pope Gregory IX (1228) “…Ecclesiam San Celestini de Vicozoario cum possessionibus suis et viginti mansos in eodem loco.”
The church belonged to the Benedictine monks who, as of 1215, delegated its custodianship to clerics or priests.
In the early years of the 15th century, the primitive Church of San Celestino e Annunziata was reconstructed. The tower, the remaining vestiges of which can be seen on the northern wall of the new church, was built in 1442. In 1459, the abbot had the priest’s residence built at his own expense. The church was extended on the front in 1506 by a fourth of its original length.
In 1530-31, the building was completely restored and embellished: the chancel, or Chapel of the Holy Sacrament, was added, which still exists between the modern church and the sacristy.
In 1531, the altar of San Michele, or Santa Lucia, was restored. In the same year, a new vaulted roof was built to replace the trussing.
The Marquis Ercole d’Este had founded a permanent benefice in 1513 for the cure of souls under the name of Santissima Annunziata, with a church to be built. Thanks to this donation and following the division of the parish of San Celestino into two parts, which took place in 1515 and was confirmed by the bishop in 1523, the new parish of Cadelbosco Sotto was formed.
At the beginning of the 17th century, a number of chapels were built in the church.
In 1637, the main bell was forged and transported to the new bell tower, where it can still be heard today.
On a design by the architect Francesco Zanni, the foundations were laid in October 1755 and on 17th June 1764 the main part of the new church was blessed, as the presbytery and chancel were finished only in 1769.
During the nine years in which the new church was built, the functions took place in the old church, which was then incorporated into the perimeter of the new one on the southern side, site of the current sacristy.
From 1812, the church held the majestic organ produced by the celebrated Traeri. The earthquake of 1832 seriously damaged the church, which was restored the following year by the master builder Antonio Iotti of Cadelbosco. In 1890-91, the entire church was renovated and embellished.
The interior, which later showed signs of deterioration, was completely renovated and embellished in 1963-64.
Worthy of viewing are number of sacred objects in silver, including a penitential cross of the 15th century, a reliquary of 1518, a censer of 1785, and a thurible of 1735.

Historical notes

The Church of San Giustina, included among the chapels dependent on San Prospero di Castello, is mentioned in the decree of Bishop Alberio in 1149, in a document of 1184, and in the roll of Church tithes of 1302 and 1318. It probably belonged to the Parish Church of Bagnolo as well as that of San Prospero di Castello. The ancient church of Santa Giustina was probably situated in the village of Vialato.
The current construction, consecrated in 1726 with the addition of the presbytery and the chancel, together with the bell tower and priest’s house, dates to the second half of the 15th century.
The remodelling works in various styles date to about 1681.
The building derives from a design by the architect Pietro Ferretti of Cavazzoli. The façade in various styles is preceded by a front portico. The interior has a single nave supported by twelve round columns. Of note are the fragments of fifteenth-century frescoes.
Following the earthquake of 1996, the church was one of the most highly damaged in the province and was closed as it was no longer fit for use.

The parish set up in 1513 with the name Santissima Annunziata had its church built in the village Ca’ de Maestri on the initiative of Prince Ercole d’Este.
The building, with only a few modifications, remains in its original form: small with a single vaulted nave with three altars. The church has an elegant Baroque façade partitioned by pilaster strips, ending in a triangular pediment with spire at the top. The tall bell tower has a chamber with single-light mullioned windows.
The priest’s house was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century.
